Washington Wins 2011 Pac-10 Conference Tournament

Tournament MVP Isaiah Thomas hit a game-winner as Washington defeated Arizona by a final of 77-75 in the title game of the 2011 Pacific-10 Conference Tournament.

Joining Thomas on the All-Tournament Team was teammate Terrence Ross, along with Derrick Williams (Arizona), Jared Cunningham (Oregon State), Klay Thompson (Washington State) and E.J. Singler (Oregon).

Huskies Survive Klay Thompson's 43 Points, Beat Washington State 89-87

Washington State junior Klay Thompson scored 43 points to set a Pac-10 tournament single-game record, but the Cougars lost 89-87 to Washington on Thursday

The Huskies fell behind by as many as 13 points Washington State,b ut they caught up and then won a back-and-forth second half with a balanced offense in which all five starters scored in double figures.

Isaiah Thomas led the Huskies with 21 points and 11 assists while playing the full 40 minutes in the absence of Venoy Overton, who sat out due to a suspension.

Thompson scored 43 points – a tournament record – but it wasn’t quite enough.

“He was the main guy scoring,” UW coach Lorenzo Romar said. “Our guys, I think the press really helped us. We spread it around, and we had a number of guys step up to make shots.”

Thompson missed a free throw and three-point attempt down the stretch that would have tied the game.

Observers are eager to see how the introverted Klay Thompson handles the added scrutiny when Washington State and Washington face off in the quarterfinals of the Pacific-10 Conference basketball tournament.

The junior guard will be playing in front of a number of NBA scouts (he has talked about turning pro after this season), and he was just voted the second-most overrated player in the conference in the 10th annual Contra Costa (Calif.) Times media poll.

Thompson, the Pac-10’s leading scorer at 21.4 points per game, was suspended one-game for possession of marijuana.

Writers Predict UCLA To Win Pac-12 In 2012

Members of the media that cover the Pac-10 were surveyed to predict which team they expect to win the new Pac-12 next season.

Out of 26 respondents, 19 predicted UCLA.

Arizona received three votes, while Cal and Washington State each received two.

Klay Thompson's Suspension Lifted

Washington State coach Ken Bone announced that he has lifted the one-game suspension on Klay Thompson and that the junior guard will play in Thursday’s Pac-10 tournament quarterfinal against Washington.

The Pac-10 scoring champion, who averages 21.4 points, dropped 25 points on the Huskies in an 87-80 victory on Jan. 31 in Pullman.

Thompson was suspended one game after being cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Thompson was named to the all-Pac-10 team on Monday.

Derrick Williams Named Pac-10 Player Of The Year

Arizona’s Derrick Williams was named Pac-10 Player of the Year, joining Matthew Bryan-Amaning (Washington), Jorge Gutierrez (California), Jeremy Green (Stanford) , Tyler Honeycutt (UCLA), Malcolm Lee  (UCLA), Reeves Nelson  (UCLA), Isaiah Thomas (Washington), Klay Thompson (Washington State), and Nikola Vucevic  (USC) on the All-Pac-10 first team.

Williams led the Wildcats in scoring (18.8 ppg), field goal percentage (.612), and rebounding (8.2 rpg), and finished among the top five scorers and rebounders in conference games.

Marcus Simmons of USC was named Defensive Player of the Year and Allen Crabbe of Cal was named Freshman of the Year.

Klay Thompson Charged, Suspended

Klay Thompson, Washington State's leading scorer, was cited Thursday night for marijuana possession after scoring 22 points to lead the Cougars to a win over USC in Pullman.

Thompson was suspended for Washington State's regular-season finale Saturday against UCLA.

"We are aware of the situation involving Klay and will continue to gather information," Washington State coach Ken Bone said in a statement released Friday. "Klay will be suspended for Saturday's game against UCLA and the situation will continue to be evaluated throughout the weekend. Until that time neither myself nor the team will have further comment."
